Soyo Oka is a legend of the early Nintendo era, working on some of the most iconic titles from Ice Hockey on the NES to Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings, and Sim City on the SNES. She was one of the most prominent women working in game music during this era and continues to serve as an inspiration through her original works and now her contributions to indie games around the world.

Working on Indie Games
I enjoy working on indie games because while I am often asked to create the sounds similar to the old days, there are no longer the technical limitations in terms of how many simultaneous sounds you can use. This is why I find this work so novel and enjoyable. I also enjoy the challenge of writing with those restrictions using today’s technology.
Favorite Kinds of Projects
In Japan, I have undertaken a wide range of projects from classical to rock and dance music. Although I’m classically trained and am asked to do that style often, fans know me for my classical music from Sim City, funk style on Pilotwings, and pop music with Super Mario Kart.
Creative Philosophy
When I joined Nintendo, I only knew ho to make music for myself. I was educated by senior staff to consider music that serves the project. Music complements the visuals and is not a solo act, and every composer needs to be a team player. I hope to join your team soon!
What Makes Me Unique
I would like to offer something that recalls the nuances of my old video game music works and others, but incorporates new sound designs and trends!
Partnership with Scarlet Moon
I was introduced to Scarlet Moon by a friend who was a member of the team. Many of Scarlet Moon’s artists are also Japanese, so it’s a very comfortable environment for me. I appreciate that they are helping me be more available to developers outside of Japan.
