Interview: Cody Carpenter on Terrifier: The ARTcade Game

Scarlet Moon is pleased to announce that we’ve teamed up with Selecta Play to make composer Cody Carpenter available to score the main theme to Terrifier: The ARTcade Game. This collaboration was just announced as a part of The Indie Horror Showcase last week, and we’ve asked Cody for a few moments of his time to answer some questions for fans.

On Being Asked to Contribute to Terrifier: The ARTcade Game

Being a fan of the beat-em-up genre, I was excited to work on the project that was a modern IP, but in a more old-school genre that I really enjoy. The screenshots and videos I saw all looked fun and vibrant.

On His Experience with the Terrifier Franchise

I was unfamiliar with the Terrifier series before, having not seen or heard of the films. After doing research for the project, I was interested to see the stylistic choices and musical direction that the movies, (more specifically the first movie), went in. The parallels between Terrifier and Halloween were also interesting to discover.

I think the franchise stands on its own merits as a modern horror property, taking influence from the past but also doing its own unique thing.

On His Process and Tools Used for the Main Theme

My first task was to familiarize myself with the Terrifier property, particularly the music and the main themes that were used. I was given direction as to what sort of feel and influences the theme should have. Things like Splatterhouse, Tales From the Crypt, Danny Elfman, Grant Kirkhope’s spooky tunes from the N64 Rare games, and of course the Terrifier themes themselves being among the various inspirations. I fleshed out the main theme/riff and worked out slightly different versions with different sounds, using a mish-mash of different plug-ins.

Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma Original Soundtrack (SRIN-1171)

One of legendary composer Shinji Hosoe’s most famous works is the Zero Escape series. It began with Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (2009), was followed by Virtue’s Last Reward (2012), and continued with Zero Time Dilemma (2016) as the third game in the series. SuperSweep Records was able to release the three-disc soundtrack in 2022 and I was recently able to dive in.

The soundtrack is accessible with track titles and credits in English, with some very interesting track titles provided by Uchikoshi-san, the game’s writer. Expect dark and foreboding vibes with chopped up and distorted electronics across sleek ambient soundscapes, unsettling electronic ambiance, and a smaller compilation of emotional instrumentals and grungy rock tracks.

Some of my favorite moments include the ticking clock of the opening track, “Tick Down,” the glassy and otherworldly “Iterate Anxiousness,” and the unsettling “Profound Duvulgation.” There’s a descent into madness with “Tortuous Idolum,” groovy bass in “Erstwhile Placidity,” and a beautiful and twangy electric guitar work in “Ustulate Pathos” that was reminiscent of famous survivor horror soundtracks. “Cuddly Ferrum” comes as a sweet pop tune, “Ambidex Game” features cool guitar riffs and aggressively panned percussion, and “Stygian Subterranean” gets into deep dark ambiance. The icy “Sacrificial Demise” sports a a chilly vibe with icy bells and electronic lead while the aptly titled “Cardiac Gloom” features the sound of a heartbeat and “Scattered Scare” gets equally unsettling with lone guitar notes, searing string swells, and sparse percussion. The overdriven radio-like quality of “Ustulate Pathos -Record-” provides a brief reprieve as the soundtrack closes out with screeching synths in “Unliberated Library” and the resolute and serene closer “Interminable Dilemma.”

Given the variety and quality of production, it’s no surprise why the Zero Escape series and its music are so highly regarded. The Zero Time Dilemma soundtrack can be imported via CD Japan for under $25 USD.

Silent Horror Original Soundtrack by Dale North (SMRC-1005)

After our inaugural release, Dragon Fantasy Book II OST by Dale North, he’s back with more, this time with his much-requested soundtrack to the 2005 X-Strike Studios film, Silent Horror. As the name would suggest, the film pays tribute to popular survival horror videogames, and while North was known primarily for his pop ballads and vocal arrangements of videogame classics at the time, the Silent Horror Original Soundtrack captures the essence of horror with its dark atmospheres and unsettling soundscapes. North’s knack for melody also shines throughout the score’s emotional character themes.

The soundtrack and a remix by long-time friend and producer Mustin are now available on iTunes and Amazon MP3, as well as on Loudr and Bandcamp for just $7 USD.

Review: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 Original Game Soundtrack

After Oscar Araujo’s impressive score for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, I was excited to see what he’d do with Lords of Shadow 2 given the modern setting. Producer Dave Cox was quick to talk about the soundtrack, telling fans that there would be an electronic edge, as well as hinting that some classic Castlevania melodies may make an appearance.

So, does the Lords of Shadow 2 soundtrack live up to expectations? Find out below. Continue reading Review: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 Original Game Soundtrack
