With her voice featured in some of gaming’s most celebrated soundtracks, J’Nique Nicole needs little introduction. The American singer-songwriter and lyricist first reached millions of players as the co-writer and voice behind NieR: Automata‘s renowned theme, “Weight of the World,” along with her vocal work on “A Beautiful Song” and “Memories of Dust” on a soundtrack that went on to win Best Score/Soundtrack at The Game Awards. Since then, she’s lent her voice to Elena’s theme in Street Fighter 6, Wuthering Waves, Gran Saga, and Girls’ Frontline, while building a career as a touring artist across Japan and, this year, becoming the first Black original soundtrack videogame vocalist to perform at Carnegie Hall as part of the NieR Orchestra Concert world tour. Scarlet Moon now represents all three lead vocalists of the NieR series, joining fellow roster artists Emi Evans and Nami Nakagawa.

Working on Indie Games
I like to work on indie games because it’s a great way to broaden my horizons and collaborate with up and coming developers. There are a lot of gems out there that can get overlooked because they’re not necessarily mainstream and I want to help change that.
Favorite Kinds of Projects
I don’t have much of a preference for the types of projects I like to work on because I love to sing all styles of music that fit any mood, any genre or game style. I’d like to think of myself as a chameleon vocally.
Creative Philosophy
My personal style/philosophy as a composer and artist is that every project deserves 100% of my passion no matter how big or small.
What Makes Me Unique
Some unique things I have to offer as an artist are that I’m really great at imitating what I hear so my voice can become whatever is required and I have a keen ear for harmonies because being a backing vocalist is something I’ve done regularly for many years. My voice is also very strong and powerful so belting and bringing lots of emotion to a song is one of my strengths as well.
Partnership with Scarlet Moon
I decided to partner with Scarlet Moon because both of my mentors, Emi Evans and Nami Nakagawa, have been represented by them as well and it has done wonders for their discographies so I knew that I’d be in good hands if I did the same. We haven’t had the chance to collaborate on any projects together yet but I’m pretty hopeful that it will be a wonderful and worthwhile experience.
